We fondly remember the character Forest Gump, played by Tom Hanks, saying several clever sayings, including “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you will get next” and “Stupid is as Stupid does.” Or at least we think that’s where we first heard those comments.
Anway, phishing emails are aimed at folks who aren’t properly self-educated about the Internet, or are too greedy to know when something’s too good to be true. We delete them ourselves by the dozens every day, some days more than others, when they make it past our anti-spam filters on the server.
Remembering simple things, like no legit ISP, Bank, etc. will ask for your password via email. Anyone getting a letter from an unknown person, telling them $$ are waiting for them if they only provide their personal bank account info, etc., ought to know it’s bogus. Anyone getting an email from “your webmaster” saying your email was being suspended due to suspicious activity from a foreign country ought to know better.

Today’s email box has been full of messages warning about Fake / Rouge AV Software or Malware tricks that some hacked websites or infected email senders use to convince the computer user to install their software and give their credit card info to the crooks.
Since the owner of WiMax San Antonio is in the Computer Consulting / Service Business, and we routinely fix computers every week that get infected, we thought we’d share some of this news and some tips with you. Then when it happens, if you still get infected, well, remember to call us for a speedy resolution to your problems.
A rise in fake antivirus offerings on Web sites around the globe shows that scammers are increasingly turning to social engineering to get malware on computers rather than exploiting holes in software, a Google study to be released on Tuesday indicates.

Fake Microsoft Endorsement Fuels Scareware
A new scareware package tries to sell bogus antivirus software to its victims using an apparent endorsement of the software by Microsoft.
A variant of the infection that urges users to buy DefenceLab antivirus software now also directs them to a Microsoft support page where a display describes a new threat and recommends using DefenceLab antivirus to clear it and protect against it.
It’s a real Microsoft support site, but it’s the malware already running on users’ infected computers that injects the threat warning and the endorsement of the antivirus software, according to a blog by Matt Kelchner, a researcher at Sunbelt Software.
The scam is intended to prod users into clicking a “Fix It” button that leads them to a site where they can buy the antivirus software.

This Blog posting is mostly a rhetorical question, but many of my visits to customers are caused by spyware or viruses crashing their computers, or causing them to slow way down. Most of those caught with such infections, usually ran free anti-virus software, didn’t keep their paid anti-virus software renewed, or clicked on some offer to install free software on their computer that they didn’t need.
So after spending most of Monday afternoon cleaning up a client’s infected computer, having to completely reinstall the XP operating system and all his applications, I also caught a cold because it dropped down into the 50′s and my short sleeve shirt wasn’t enough protection due to all the windows being opened in his house.

As I write this entry on my laptop, using my CLEAR WiMax USB modem,
I’m over on the north side of San Antonio, on a dead end street named “River Park”, in a small subdivision off of Bitters Rd & Blanco. Just ran Speedtest.net and found 14 mbps download speed first time, 11.8 mbps the second time.
Got better speeds when I went out to the back of the house, about 2 mbps faster download. Upload was about the same speed..
On the road again, more than 4 hours later, … and I don’t know it yet, but I just caught a cold working on this guy’s computer with all the doors and windows wide open so we could watch the deer playing on the golf course out back. (They weren’t using golf clubs, however.)
