Microsoft Patch Causes Blue Screen? KB977165

Microsoft has removed one group of patches it released as part of this week’s Patch Tuesday (02/09/2010) — MS10-015 (KB977165) – from its Windows Update service until it can investigate reports by some users that it is causing havoc with their PCs.   Microsoft provided an update on the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) blog on February 11 about its actions, after a day of reports by users with problems, including some XP users claiming blue-screen-of-death (BSOD) issues seemingly resulting from application of the KB977165 patch.

Looking Ahead: Windows XP SP2 Support Ends July 2010

windows_logoIf you’re like one of the many customers that we know who are still running XP with SP2, you should be aware that Microsoft plans to cut off support for XP SP2 (and older versions) on July 13, 2010. But if you go ahead and upgrade before then to XP Service Pack 3 (a free upgrade using Windows Update service), you can continue to get extended support (read that as “paid support”) until April 2014.

Support for Windows 2000, should you still have any computers running that operating system, will also end at that time.

After this date, public support for these products ends and Microsoft will no longer provide any assisted support or security updates.

For Windows 2000, this means that Service Pack 4 is the end of the line. If you are still running this (very stable in our opinion) version, Microsoft is encouraging you to move up to Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.

If you are running anything less than SP4, please update now to SP4.   Many of the main anti-virus programs will require you to be running SP4 soon, if not already.
