Thanks to CLEAR coming out with new, more compact and easier to use 4G and 4G/3G personal hotspot devices, even folks who chose to limit themselves to the iPhone 4 can now experience the speed and thrill of CLEAR’s 4G network here in  San Antonio and other markets in Texas.  And now you can easily share your 4G signal, unlimited use on the 4G side, with your friends, or even just with your own smart phone if you don’t own an EVO already.

CLEAR has released two new devices, the CLEAR Spot 4G and the CLEAR Spot 4G+, this month.  Don’t confuse these with the older model called a “Clearspot” made by Cradlepoint (PHS300).  You don’t need to plug in a separate USB modem to these new devices, it’s all built in!   Each also has an internal battery so you can slip either one into your shirt or pants pocket, or for the ladies, their purse. 

We recently attended a training session in San Antonio where we got to touch and feel one of the Clear Spot 4G units.  It’s so tiny!  Only about 2.5″ wide and 4″ long, about  4 or 5 ounces in weight (with battery installed).  Simple to operate with LED lights to tell you what’s happening.  And if you forgot what color LED light means what, the instructions are written on the bottom of the device.  Talk about simple!

The CLEAR Spot 4G+ unit was a bit larger, but not much heavier, than the CLEAR Spot 4G unit.  They didn’t have one for us to play with during the training class, but said the local office would  have some soon if we wanted to pop back in for a visit later. The Clear Spot 4G+ unit is the same one that Sprint is selling under the name of  “Overdrive”.

We just ordered our very own 4G unit to play with and demo to our customers. 

Naturally, CLEAR’s prices are lower than Sprint when it comes to buying or using these two devices.   You can get the CLEAR Spot 4G for a monthly $40 service fee, and either lease one for $4.99/month or buy one for $99.99.   These items are “drop ship only” so when you order one thru us, we’ll have it dropped shipped to you by 3pm the next business day if we get the order before 5pm local time, M-F.  If ordered on a weekend, it’ll get here on Tuesday.  Or at least that’s the plan.  Shipping cost adds a one time fee of $4.95, which is really dirt cheap for overnight delivery within the USA.

The CLEAR Spot 4G+ unit is a tad more expensive per month and cost of ownership, when compared with the CLEAR Spot 4G unit.   The service fee for the CLEAR Spot 4G+ is $55/month and the lease fee is $5.99/month or you can purchase it for $224.99.   Sprint offers it for $349.99 without 2 yr contract, and for $99 (after a $50 mail in rebate that takes 10-14 weeks) with new 2 year contract.  But Sprint’s monthly fee is $69.99 plus tax, fees, etc., so you’ll be paying a lot less for the CLEAR Spot 4G+ than you will for that Overdrive unit.  Both use the CLEAR 4G network and the Sprint 3G network.  Both have the 5gb/month data usage limit on the 3G side.
